Lakers Set to Open 2022 Season

Lakers Set to Open 2022 Season

2/2/2022

The Lakers are set to open their 2022 season this weekend as they travel to Walters State CC to take on the #5 Senators.

Walters State CC is coming off of a 61-7 season where they saw a trip to Grand Junction.

The first game for the Lakers is a Sunday 2/6/2022 double header starting at 12:00pm.

It's an exciting year for the Lakers as they return a good amount from the year before. The Lakers saw a regular season finish of 27-27 only to be knocked out of the playoff to finish the year 27-28. On the field the Lakers return Jason Brulport who boosted the team's offense with 7 HR and close to 40 RBIs. Keegan Garis led the Lakers with 17 doubles and close to 40 RBIs. It's safe to say these two will threaten the opposing team's pitchers, hitting in the middle of the order this season. On the infield, the Lakers will return Jacob Walker, who posted above a .280 batting avg and was a threat on the bases. Ben Schuler (Benny Barrels) returns for his red-shirt year to pick up where he left off as a freshman. Bryan Belo returns with an above .300 avg from last spring and a couple of homeruns. The Lakers are excited to add some defense at third base with Brody Macak and Anthony Fornero. Nathan Gehreke will be a force to reckon with, returning with 4 HR and a big grand slam vs the Blue Knights of Olney Central to walk it of. Covering the outfield for the Lakers returns Cameron Nagel and Morningside College committ Ryan Kiolbassa.

Newcomers for the Lakers at the plate are LHH Jude Sullivan, LHH Johnny Sweeney and RHH Justin Prager.

On the mound the Lakers return Ohio Commit, RHP Carter Sabol, Quincy Commit LHP Nash Mose and RHP Lucas Otto, who all saw time on a pitching staff that struck out close to 500 batters last spring.

The Lakers add some punch on the mound with newcomers, University of Illinis Chicago Commit RHP Connor Gill, FR LHP Austin Baker, FR RHP Dominc Guzman, LHP Matt Porter, Butler transfer RHP Gabe Phipps and USC Upstate transfer RHP Eben Heine.

The Lakers are locked and loaded to take on a schedule that is home to teams in the top 20 rankings for both NJCAA D1 and D2.
